Regarding your story, I suppose friendliness is often taken as naivete.

I wonder if he, too, is passing along your shared story in some form or fashion (although it might be too much to hope he has a newsletter)? It seems like he most certainly must have done that, although I think we probably overestimate how much people talk about us. It's not that people aren't gossip hounds, they certainly are, but there is an inexhaustible store of potential gossip.

We can never really know how much people are gossiping about us. Some, inevitably, must get left behind, and not gossiped about much. Would these people be very much hurt to know that? I see a conflict in that there is great pressure to be memorable, on the one hand, yet equal pressure not to be weird, on the other. Unless one was born with great looks, it's hard to be memorable without being weird. Being weird is the easiest route.
